Illuminated REVIEW! #515

Name of the book- Illuminated

Name of the author- Iris Marsh

A 16-year-old striver named Nikki Chase feels as though her life is disintegrating all around her. Her closest friend chooses to hang out with the popular girl, her parents’ marriage appears to be in peril, and she is confident that she is on the point of insanity. After all, typical individuals don’t hear voices or perceive colors around other people. Nikki is determined to understand what’s wrong with her and whether or not she should be in a psychiatric institution when a volunteer project brings her there. She finds something very unexpected: A volunteer named Lorene assures Nikki that while she may not be insane, she can shape others’ opinions. People like her, however, have been having their strength sapped, leaving them as hollow shells in their wake. Nikki links up with Lorene to find out who is responsible for the siphoning since she needs assistance and someone she can trust. Can she, however, stop them before she falls victim to them? And can she achieve it without succumbing to her power addiction?

On November 21, this forthcoming fantasy will be released. In this novel, a girl learns she has magical abilities, and there are those out to get her to use them for their ends. She is the kind of heroine I like reading about—vulnerable, independent, impulsive yet sensible, determined, sympathetic, and able to carry the narrative on her own. The creation of the planet was fantastic. The book got off to a great start. It quickly created a storyline that I couldn’t put down, with the ideal balance of mystery and magical realism. I enjoyed every second of it, even if the whys and hows of the magical elements were not explained.

One of my favorites was the element of mystery. There wasn’t much foreshadowing, even in retrospect, and there were no obvious hints as to who was guilty. All of the main characters in the story are well known to us, but some are featured more than others. Amazing writing, fascinating characters, a riddle to solve, and solace. I was captivated by the story from the first page and continued reading all the way through. This YA coming-of-age fantasy thriller tale about living with challenging emotions, balancing relationships with family and friends, and the addicting nature of power will appeal to fans of suspenseful contemporary fantasy.
