Butter REVIEW! #1607

Name of the book – Butter

Name of the author – Asako Yuzuki

This book’s main character is Rika, a journalist who leads a simple and career-oriented life. She wants to be on the editorial desk of the magazine she is currently working in, and she is searching for a breakthrough story. She goes to her friend Reiko’s house for dinner, and she comes up with the idea of covering the case of Manako Kaji, who is accused of killing three people. Manako Kaji’s case had stirred a lot of buzz around it as she had the following interesting factors about her –

  1. She was not interested in talking to journalists or media personnel.
  2. She was a very healthy woman, and she worked as a sex worker, this baffled a lot of people in society.
  3. She claimed that her food seduced the men who helped her maintain her lifestyle.
Rika cleverly writes a letter and asks her for the beef stew recipe that intrigues Kaji’s interest and she agrees to meet her. At first glance, Kaji seems to be a soft-spoken, innocent woman who loves eating and cooking food, but as Rika continues meeting her, she realises that Kaji is not as innocent as she appears.

Butter is not what I expected. The blurb said that a true incident inspired it, and I anticipated a little thrill or mystery. However, it turned out to be much more than that. The author has covered a lot, which will consume a lot of time for the readers, but it is all worth it in the end. From mouth-watering descriptions of different foods from Japan, to how misogynistic the Japanese society can be, this book has it all. The readers get a very realistic glimpse of how Japanese work culture works as they get accustomed to the busy lives of the characters in the book.

Not only that, if I start writing about the characters, this review will turn into a thesis paper. However, one thing I loved about this book is the message it gave – how we get easily influenced by people. How we easily bend our thoughts and start thinking that, if this person loves this, then it must be good for us too, and by doing this we lose ourselves in the process, we never get to know what’s good enough for us. And when we finally do, that makes us Winner in life. Finally, grab some snacks while reading this book, this book will make you hungry!
