Journey under the midnight sun REVIEW! #1513

Name of the book – JOURNEY UNDER THE MIDNIGHT SUN

Name of the author – Keigo Higashino

“When you wander in the dark too long, you start to see things that aren’t really there.”

In the bustling streets of 1970s Osaka, a shocking crime sends ripples through the lives of two young individuals, Ryo and Yukiho. When Ryo’s father is brutally murdered, suspicion falls on Yukiho, a quiet girl with a troubled past. Despite being the prime suspect, Yukiho is never convicted, leaving Ryo haunted by unanswered questions. As the years pass, their lives take divergent paths, but the shadow of the unsolved murder continues to loom large. Determined to uncover the truth, Ryo embarks on a relentless quest for justice, unraveling a complex web of secrets, lies, and betrayals that spans two decades. From the neon-lit streets of Osaka to the tranquil beauty of Hokkaido, “Journey Under the Midnight Sun” is a riveting tale of mystery, intrigue, and the enduring power of human connection in the face of adversity.

Compared to other crime novels I’ve read, this one follows the mystery and its consequences over an extended length of time. Because of the book’s complexity, the reader is aware that only the Minotaur will be waiting for him at the end of this maze. Most of the book’s points of view are those of minor characters. It also paints an intriguing picture of the numerous facets of Japanese culture, including dating, marriage, school, business, and women’s roles, as well as the country’s dramatic changes since the 1970s.

There’s a hint of uncertainty even at the end. Similar to Sasagaki, the reader may easily become fixated on this story’s veracity. Although I didn’t think the ending was quite satisfying, I still thought the book was fantastic overall. This tale matures like a good wine, thus the reader will need to be patient because every character has a purpose!

Favorite lines from the book –

“I would propose that every woman has a little darkness under the surface.”

“Watch the shrimp and eventually you’ll find the goby, that was his belief.”

“If we know the truth, there’s nothing to be afraid of”

Rating of the book – 4⭐/5⭐
